Our Philosophy

MORE THAN JUST SURF LESSONS

At Scarborough Beach Surf School we believe surfing is one of life’s greatest teachers. It asks you to be patient, present, and persistent — and rewards you with a feeling no other sport can match.

Since 1986 we have introduced thousands of people to the ocean, and our philosophy has stayed the same: keep it fun, keep it safe, and help every student find their own connection with the water.

Our lessons welcome all ages, all fitness levels and all backgrounds. We adapt our teaching style to the individual, not the other way around.

In every lesson we provide:

A beach briefing on conditions, and set goals for the session;

Warm up and dry land pop-up practice;

Guided water time with real-time coaching;

Wave reading and positioning skills;

Personalised feedback after every ride;

Cool down debrief and take-home tips

We cap our groups at 6 students so every surfer gets our coaches’ eyes on them in the water at all times. You spend more time surfing and less time waiting. Progress is visible, satisfying, and celebrated.

We can’t promise to make you a world champion, but I love Surfing World Champion (2025) Molly Picklum’s attitude toward her sport:

‘I love the ocean. I love playing with her. We just dance with the ocean every day…your real breakthrough comes when you surrender to the waves and the ocean and just enjoy and accept whatever is going to unfold. The ocean is the greatest teacher of life and I truly, truly, love that.’

We measure success by our student’s smiles coming out of the water, not by how many turns someone can make. If you finish a lesson feeling stoked, then it’s a good day for us too.

Every day is a new adventure in the ocean, and we’re looking forward to sharing one with you!
